Stryder was a local owner surrender, having been rescued from literal starvation. He is still underweight but working toward packing on extra pounds every single day.

He is a very handsome neutered male being fostered in Mechanicsville, VA with his foster mom Jes, her two boys (9 and 7), and two indoor kitties. Despite his large size, Stryder can be both gentle and sweet. He greeted the kids nicely and proceeded to explore the downstairs part of my home with both confidence and lots of curiosity. It is only during playtime he sometimes forgets just how big he is and is known to tumble and bump into whatever might be in his way.

Upon arrival, Stryder was intensely focused on food and would take whatever he could reach, even if that meant stealing burgers right off the table. He was very guarded toward other dogs at meal time and had to be fed separately. He's come a long way from that and while he still needs to learn how not to hover around the table, he's less of a thief these days. Recently, I introduced him to being fed with my dogs, under supervision, and with space between them. He no longer is outwardly aggressive, but still needs to be monitored during meal time. I believe this will continue to improve with proper training. At no point has he shown any aggressive behavior toward myself or the kids and is expected to sit politely before being allowed to approach his food bowls.

While Stryder is learning to coexist with cats, he would do best in a home without them.

Stryder absolutely LOVES having a playmate and would do well with other dogs similar in size with an energy level to match his own. He is very active, highly intelligent, and will need a constant companion to engage with...this means walks, training, having a job (or three) to keep him physically and mentally stimulated, and so on. He would play all day if you asked him to, so it is important that he have an outlet for all the "GO" he's got to give. A fenced in yard is not required, but would make him very happy.  Styder also loves squeaky toys, fetch, and tug-of-war.

And if you're wondering...Stryder is crate trained and house broken. He is a little slow to show affection, but as he begins to warm up to you, you'll find he's got quite the sense of humor.  He can be rather "chatty" too, which always makes me laugh.
